If Adam and Eve had not eaten the apple, they would have remained in daily communion with God, able to learn from him and share in the creative process with him. We can contrast the activities of mankind before the fall with the curse to get an idea of what would have been present in humanity and what would not have been present.
First of all we can look at what God did with Adam and Eve before the fall:
- He created a diverse and exciting paradise for them to live in. (Gen 1:14-25)
- He gave them meaningful work to do. (Taming & ruling over creation & reproducing) (Gen 1:26;28)
- He gave them all they needed to thrive (Gen 1:29)
- He made their home beautiful, protected, and pristine (Gen 2:8-9)
- He visited them daily to give them guidance (Gen 3:8)
Then we can contrast that with the curse after the fall:
- Relationship between God & mankind is damaged (Genesis 3:10)
- Pain in childbearing increased (Gen 3:16)
- Human romantic relationships become a power struggle (Gen 3:16)
- Work becomes painful (Gen 3:17)
- Work becomes monotonous & drudgery (3:17)
- Work becomes difficult (Gen 3:18)
- We die (Gen 3:19)
- We cannot eat from the tree of life and live forever (Gen 3:22)
So we can conclude that if humanity had not fallen, we would still be in an innocent pristine state. We would be naked, with nothing to be ashamed about – exposed before God and one another with no fear of rejection or pain. There would be no strife between human beings and God, instead we would learn how to go about existence from a being intelligent and powerful enough to design the universe. We would also be in complete harmony with one another with no fighting or power struggles or pride getting in the way of love and kindness and cooperative effort.
Our work would be easy and rewarding. I kind of think of it almost like a Facebook game. Almost everyone loves planting crops on Farmville becuase it’s easy to plant something, the weeds don’t come up (if they do they are simple to deal with), the crops are never dead or rotten as long as you do the right thing and your progress mounts and you feel a sense of accomplishment. Work is rarely this way in real life! People thwart your progress, you run up against frustrating obstacles with no way to resolve them, unforeseen difficulties crop up and destroy your work and you have nothing to show for your efforts. Before the curse, work was easy, rewarding and pleasurable. Our talents would be put to good use and our efforts would never be unappreciated or wasted.
And after 60 years of raising a family & pursuing our interests we would never experience bodily decay, because we would be allowed to eat from the tree of life and renew our bodies and live forever. We would never have to worry about our work being destroyed, our children dying of diseases. We would never have to listen to a news report about child abuse or terrorism or war or disease or deformity.
But thanks be to God in Christ Jesus that the day is coming when we will return to our state in Eden!
“Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Isaiah 11 Describes our return to this pristine state where all of nature is at peace and no animal harms another animal any more, and no human being is permitted to harm another.
“The infant will play near the cobra’s den, and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.
They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.”
– Isaiah 11:8-9
